The Dog Ball is coming February 10th and supports the Huntsville Humane Society. I was one of 5 artists selected to paint a hydrant-a wildly coveted title "hydrant artist"-haha! Yesterday was a magical day in the gallery! I had an appointment with a very nice couple who had said they were interested in my Auburn art. I showed them my pieces, told them my thoughts behind the pieces, and left them to decide on which one they wanted. When they came to me, they said they wanted FOUR! Wow, yay! War Eagle!!! It's wonderful to have days like that in my gallery. I'm grateful to them and ALL my clients who love my work! So, I'm anxious to paint some new ones.

But for now, if you want an original--you better hurry. There aren't many left!

A noble dependency

Dear Carole,

Recent studies of teenagers' use of cellphones and other electronic devices have revealed some interesting results. Apparently, if you deprive kids of social networking for a week or so, a high percentage become significantly depressed. They also lose efficiency, will, enthusiasm and sleep. Their marks go down and their lassitude goes up.

For many artists, something similar happens when "the work quotient" is taken from their lives. A couple of unproductive days can send some creative folks into the dumps. They may not even be aware of what's happening to them. "Fear of restart" and permanent creative catatonia can set in after long-term abstinence.

Fact is, good easel time is a noble dependency that makes you a happier, more generous person--better able to enjoy an enriched family and social life. Here are a few ways to promote these glad tidings:

Self control. While spontaneity is vital in the studio, monitoring easel time and work zones is also valuable. Work periods can be restarted with a gong or the change of a radio program. The "four o'clock reboot," where you begin something new in the late afternoon (normally a slower time of day), accumulates bonus points, tops up the psyche and makes you more brilliant than Voltaire at the dinner party.

Serendipitous bumping. When you put in significant time in the work area, work automatically emerges. Creative tools, studio clutter and half-finished works conspire to attract your attention. Ideas breed and things need to be done. Rather than making a decision to get on with something, merely bump into opportunities.

Creative exhibitionism. Just as the boy and girl get their thrills texting across a classroom, connecting your work with others is good for art and life. I'm not talking about dealer action or green feedback. The work itself, in progress or completed, in exchange or not, can be sent by jpeg to global friends in nanoseconds. A critique or approval may be forthcoming, but more often than not it's just the simple human joy of sharing. "Electronic interdependence," famously said Marshall McLuhan, "recreates the world in the image of a global village." While we may operate as independent workers, we are not islands unto ourselves. The Brotherhood and Sisterhood is alive and well and living in cyberspace.

Esoterica: Another way of thinking of art dependency is in co-dependency. Your work needs you as much as you need it. Your work begs your expression. You need to materialize it on a daily basis, from your enriched life--the better side of your nature. Without your personal focus and action, your magic cannot and never will exist. Think of all the great work you have left to do. Think of how necessary it is for people to see good work. "Work," said Kahlil Gibran, "is love made visible."

Be the first to take in the magic of Herb Ritts (1952-2002), one of the most influential celebrity and fashion photographers to work in the late twentieth century. Ritts produced iconic portraits and editorial fashion for Vogue,Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone; created successful ad campaigns for Calvin Klein, CHANEL, Gianni Versace and Giorgio Armani; and directed music videos for Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Michael Jackson.

I am very busy right now mostly being a Mom with school starting back this week and my older daughter beginning classes at my beloved alma mater-Auburn University! I couldn't be more excited about her being there! Last weekend she even received a bid as a legacy to my sorority-Kappa Delta. Wow, how blessed I feel! So much to look forward to.

From the ART front, I have some news about to break! It can't happen fast enough! I've been working at this event since January and it is finally going to happen! More on that later!

I'm finishing paintings right now that will be delivered to the Huntsville Museum of Art this week for the Vignettes show that will be hanging from September 6th-22nd. I'll be tweeting and facebooking about the details on that!

Los Angeles, July 14, 2010 – Due to the stifling after effects that continue to plague the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor-spill survivors of the Tohoku region of Japan, Hollywood/Japanese actor Shin Koyamada’s non-profit organization the Shin Koyamada Foundation (SKF) has also upped their efforts to bring hope and help to those victims. Yet SKF’s latest benefit event has added a new twist…it’s to help ease the burdens of the families that suffered losses during the recent string of destructive tornadoes that devastated parts of Alabama.

She was so awesome to allow my family the use of her home there for spring break after she and I did some research for our FEARLESS Workshop we plan to have there.

I'm so excited about spring break with my girls as we head to Seaside to stay with my friend Rene who has a lovely house there. Pics will come as I know she will have the place picture-worthy.

Made it to my sister's home in St. Paul MN today-praise God! Needed a visit in a big way. Look at what I found. She ordered a Cam print back during that week I sold them after the AU vs LSU game. Isn't it cute! The original is 4ftx4ft and this a small giclee on canvas that is only 8" square. Just had to share. Dear Carole,

Yesterday, Darryl Daniels of Montgomery, AL wrote, "I lost my 'inner artist' over a period of years when I was taking care of my grandparents, trying to run a business and dealing with the challenges of marriage, etc. I stopped thinking about art and was knocked off course. While I now have art magazines, books and other forms of stimulation, I can't begin again and I have persistent feelings of failure. When I think about what I have not done, the work ahead seems like an overwhelming mountain. How does one recover from this condition?"

Thanks, Darryl. I'm willing to bet that every artist in the history of art has suffered from your condition. Some suffer for months or years, others weekly, others several times a day. I'm suffering from it right this minute, but there's a good chance I'll be back to work as soon as I get this letter written.

Generally speaking, books, magazines and other stimuli don't work. You have to steel yourself up and get yourself busy. It's the work itself that rocks the mountain. If there ever was such a thing as an "inner artist," it's something like a pile of loose bricks that you have to form into a small monument every day. This is the simple difference between dreamers and doers. I call it the "worker's edge."

A goodly part of the worker's edge is the knowledge and understanding that your personal creative processes are their own reward. Painting, for example, can be a parade of minor defeats and failures, but nevertheless the personal and individual working process is more positive than negative. Up here in Canada we call it "beavering away." Beavering can start at any time, even with old beavers. Our national animal serves us well. Beavers pay little attention to the overweening mountain. Simple accumulation changes the course of rivers.

What happened to your inner artist? Your inner artist has just been temporarily out of action. Your basic human instinct to invent, create and build is still just below the surface. To flourish, you need to exercise. Ready or not, you need to start. The philosopher Lao-Tzu (604 BC--531 BC) said it some time ago: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Carole has artwork to be bid on and won as Gala celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011! This important fundraiser for the Huntsville Museum of art presents over 100 historical and contemporary artworks in a range of media and styles, to be auctioned to the highest bidder during the annual Gala event.

The 2011 Black Tie Dinner and Live Auction takes place on Thursday, March 3 at 6:30pm. The event will honor the featured artists from the past twenty years. Examples of each artist’s work, provided by local collectors, will be on display throughout the evening. A gourmet five course dinner will be catered by Jimmy Boyce of Cotton Row, Pane e Vino and Commerce Kitchen. The live auction will follow dinner and feature artwork, jewelry and luxurious escapes.

Gala festivities come to a close with the 2011 Cocktail Party and Silent Auction on Saturday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. Musical guests and Gold recording artists The Tams make an encore appearance and are sure to keep the dance floor hopping. Our silent auction features a wide selection of works by featured artist, Gary Bodner, as well as paintings, sculpture and jewelry from local and regional artists. Hors d’ouevres from Catering by Narvell will be served throughout the evening.

Being one who exercises regularly and who is into my 40's, I suffer so often with tightness and soreness. The past several years it's caused alot of angst in my hips, quads and hamstrings. After a wellness session with Naomi Jacobs yesterday, I am sold on this idea and just HAD to share!

Spinning Class

I survived my fist spinning class today. Have you ever done one? With all the trouble I've had the past years with my tight psoas in my hips, this is a recommended exercise. I have dreaded this day to say the least. BUT, it was great! I pedaled for an entire hour and burned 700 calories. Wow. Can't beat that. Thank you to my friend Angela and my husband for encouraging it.

Talk to me tomorrow when who knows what will so very sore. OUCH!

Bridgette just came and picked up her painting that I finished right before Christmas. She loved it! I was so excited to see her face. That moment can be frightening, but I felt great about it since others have loved it so far and someone even wanted to buy it when it was for Bridgette all along. This home was legendary Coach Pay Dye's farm house years ago. It now sits on a lake in Real Town, AL near Auburn. Loved the South Louisiana style architecture! So, what do you think of it?

Wow, what a week it's been! My head has been overtaken by excitement and pride for my Auburn Tigers. So WAAAAAR EAGLE!!!! My Alma Mater, my beloved Auburn Football team is 2010 National Champions! I was so blessed to be able to go to the game. It was an amazing experience, and one that I will never forget.

Today, I learned that my older baby, Caroline received a scholarship for her 2011 Freshman year at Auburn. My heart is warm!

Below is a 7-second fun video my twin sister, Claire and I did when we went down to visit Auburn last Saturday to load up on Auburn National Championship gear and for Claire to see the campus after 20 years. Yes, 20 years! I couldn't believe it had been that long. So...we HAD to go.

Today was so much fun working with this little guy for his private class. Amazing what a talented 7-year old can do! We painted clownfishes and he did a large one of "Riley," a fish he saw in the waters at the beach this summer. Turned out great! His mom was so excited when she saw all the art he got done in only 2 hours! Summer So Far...

I hope your summer is going well-all I know is that it's going fast! I've been able to spend a peaceful time from the gallery (open by appointment) yet still holding Paint Nights and my Thursday Color Cafe and some private lessons too. But my heart has been at the river! Spending time being inspired from sights, smells and senses from my childhood where my family would spend weeks at a time.

What an amazing time this was. Sara Beth Fair, Rene Stubblefield and I shared an inspirational day of painting together. Three artists sharing life, painting, food, wine on the porch and grounds of her beautiful Southern home atop Monte Sano mountain. It felt like a big God hug being with these ladies and all the talent they have!

I had a wonderful group of ladies last night to paint some of our favorite things in life-shoes! Thank you for doing such an amazing job and conquering your fears in approaching a blank canvas--you rocked! I admit, this was not the easiest painting to do, and that made me feel more impressed over the end results. I hope to have you back soon!

Painting Jesus Live - Shot by Stephanie Fenton

This Easter season was so wonderful in so many ways. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit so deeply--all during Holy Week. My mind and heart were set on Him, and I praise Him for the amazing love I felt. I was given the opportunity to paint live during the Maundy Thursday service at First Baptist Church in Athens, and I've never felt such a KNOWING of doing something that He led me to do. I was never nervous about painting in front of a few hundred people--that never hit me. I truly can say that I painted for an audience of one, and He emerged slowly, crucified, bloody onto my large canvas as the Celebration Choir of over a hundred angelic voices sang the somber, yet loving choruses depicting the crucifixion. I was ONE with my savior that night. The people felt it. I heard people shedding tears. Truly moving. Notes from people that I've received since that night spell out an account that night of feeling closer to God than ever before. I credit Ryan Leffel, the amazing choir director for having the foresight to mix the arts of music and painting to create a moving worship experience for our community. I thank him for that. It was a chance to give our God-given gifts back to our Lord in an act of worship. How amazing! How wonderful!

I praise God for allowing me to have a gift that I can share with people to bring them to Christ. My Jesus paintings have been an amazing way to connect people to their Creator. As happened Christmas Eve when a person visited my gallery and found one of my paintings, someone came into my gallery Easter Eve and found another one. It was a moment of sharing my Jesus Painting Tour Ministry with her and tears welled up in her eyes, and bang! I knew it was God there prompting me to share one of my paintings with her. I did. It was the small one I painted this week to launch my latest painting tour. But, I 'll paint another one. Sherry is a sweet, beautiful lady who came in with her daughter and shared that her brother is suffering from cancer. A minister in Mississippi, he collects works of art that depict Jesus. Sherry plans a trip to visit him and bring him my painting. How awesome is that? I can't wait t hear how it goes.

Maundy Thursday

Leonardo Da Vinci's "Last Supper"

I was asked what "Maundy" meant in describing today--Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday. And "maundy" was explained like this on Wikipedia 'Most scholars agree that the English word Maundy in that name for the day is derived through Middle English, and Old French mandé, from the Latin mandatum, the first word of the phrase "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" ("A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you"), the statement by Jesus in the Gospel of John (13:34) by which Jesus explained to the Apostles the significance of his action of washing their feet. The phrase is used as the antiphon sung during the "Mandatum" ceremony of the washing of the feet, which may be held during Mass or at another time as a separate event, during which a priest or bishop (representing Christ) ceremonially washes the feet of others, typically 12 persons chosen as a cross-section of the community."

So, it's safe to say that it means love one another the way Jesus loved/loves each of us. A tough thing to do, but I believe He blesses our efforts!

A Great Start To Holy Week

Just finished a great workout to begin Holy Week--listening to Tammy Trent's lively Christian music. If you don't know her and her music, you must! She has smooth, silky voice paired with soft ballads, R&B sounds and lyrics that inspire! What more to get your body moving?

Now, I'm enjoying a new smoothie full of healthy goodness that I wanted to share with you.

I hope your day has begun in a beautiful way. Here, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, telling me that Spring is really here. I long to be ever close to my Savior this week, grateful for His journey He made to the cross for me, for you. I pray that you know how loved you really are!

A Dream Come True For Me

For years now, I have wanted to use my gift of painting more and more for ministry, and this week it will happen in a very dramatic way! Ryan Leffel (above), Music Minister at First Baptist Church in Athens invited me to the very thing I've wanted to do: paint live during a worship service. And you know what? Maundy Thursday is my favorite service of the year bringing to heart the very suffering that Christ did for us. The pain doesn't last long as we anticipate the incredible joy of the risen Christ on Easter Sunday. Below is the image that I will be painting. This is one I did this week to practice, and I think it's the best one I've ever done! It's a large piece: 48"x48". If you would like to join us, please do! Click the flyer above to enlarge it.
